Water Heater Parts and Accessories

If you want to keep your existing hot water heating unit in top working condition and extend its useful life, the best thing you can do is to keep it properly maintained. There are several simple and inexpensive steps you can take to do this, some requiring annual maintenance and others just a one-time fix.

Here are some water heater parts and accessories that can help with your home maintenance. This is a basic list, and [Name] can provide additional advice and assistance for most units. Just give us a call.

Water Heater Insulation

Increase the efficiency of your unit by insulating the pipes with foam pipe insulation. If you have a tank-type unit, insulate the entire tank with an insulating blanket to prevent heat loss of stored water.

Tank Draining Tools

If one of your annual or semi-annual maintenance steps involves draining your water tank, you’re going to need the right type of drain hose.

TPR Valve

One item that might fail before you need to replace an entire tank-type unit is the TPR valve, also called the T&P valve, on the side of the tank. This is a valve that opens if the tank’s pressure is too high. This is something you can buy and replace when needed.

Anode Rods

An anode rod is threaded from the top of your hot water tank and is meant to protect the inside of your tank from rusting. If it is ignored after it goes bad, you’re going to need a new tank sooner rather than later. You can check this rod, and if it is corroded, replace it so that it continues to do its job.

Heating Elements

The part of your hot water heating unit that “heats” the water might fail, requiring replacement. You can replace just the heating element in your water heater.  (Some water heaters have two of these.)

Thermostats

If your water heater stops heating and it’s not the heating element, it might be one of the thermostats. Figuring out the issue requires some troubleshooting, but you can replace the thermostat on your water heater instead of opting to get a new unit.

Dip Tubes

Not all water heaters have these, but some have what’s called a dip tubes that directs incoming water to the bottom of the unit for warming. If your unit has this part, it should be checked twice annually for corrosion and replaced when necessary.

Gas Valves and Accessories

If you have a gas water heater, you’re going to need some additional parts to keep your unit operating safely and efficiently. These might include gas pressure regulators, gas shut-off valves, and quick disconnect gas couplings.
